Our Air Source Heat Pumps course enables engineers who hold the pre-requisites to branch into the renewable sector. To meet the UK’s legally-binding climate targets, thousands more heating engineers will need to learn to install and maintain Air Source Heat Pumps. The Heat Training Grant supports trainees in England taking short training courses relevant to heat pumps and heat networks, meaning we now have funding available again for allocation against this course.
The qualification gained on successful completion, LCL Awards Level 3 Award in the Installation and Maintenance of Air Source Heat Pumps is recognised by MCS.
Entry requirements
In order to complete the course you must hold:
- Current Water Regulations qualification
- Current ACS OR OFTEC qualification OR have audit-able evidence of prior work and pass an entry assessment OR hold a Diploma Level 2 OR NVQ in Plumbing OR hold an NVQ level 2 in Heating and Ventilation.
you must also have industry knowledge covering plumbing skills.
If you wish to register with MCS on completion you will also need the following:
- Current Energy Efficiency qualification OR Level 3 Award in Low Temperature Heating and Hot Water Systems in Dwellings

How is this course structured?
Upon booking this course we will request copies of your qualifications/certificates for the pre-requisites to the qualification, after this and payment for your position has been made you will receive a formal booking confirmation detailing our centre, location and all your course details.
Over the three days both training and assessments will be covered.
In the training and assessments the following topics are covered;
- Risk assessments and associated health and safety
- Regulations and standards associated with heat pumps
- Understanding of the working, components and types of systems/pumps associated with heat pumps
- Selection of the correct heat pump for the system selected or installed
- Preparation, installation, commissioning, and hand over requirements for any works completed
- Inspection, servicing, repairs, diagnosis faults and malfunctions regarding heat pumps and aspects of possible issues on site
- Understanding of the requirements needed to work on the refrigerant side of heat pumps
Assessments are conducted within your course consisting of both theory and practical. All assessments conducted are open book and a normative folder of documents will be available for you to use.

Our course is normally charged at only £595+vat but currently has £500 funding through The Heat Training Grant available per candidate to be allocated to this meaning you only pay £214 including vat and will be payable in full. This cost covers the training, assessments, certification fees and refreshments whilst in centre.
