If you install domestic air con or heat pumps, the rules of the game are shifting. The transition from R410A to R32 was straightforward, but the next shift is completely different.
We are moving to R290 (refrigerant-grade propane).
Major manufacturers are already phasing out R32 to meet tightening environmental laws. If you think your standard Cat 1 or Cat 2 F-Gas ticket automatically qualifies you to work on these new units, you need to look at the safety regulations. Here is what you need to know, fast.
The Deadlines You Need to Know
This isn’t happening in the distant future. The regulatory deadlines are forcing manufacturers to flood the market with R290 gear right now:
January 1, 2027 (Next Year): New self-contained monoblock systems and heat pumps (<12kW) must use a refrigerant with a GWP under 150. R32 is banned here. R290 (GWP of 3) is the primary replacement.
January 1, 2029: New domestic split air-to-air systems (<12kW) must also drop below a 150 GWP. This is the end of R32 for standard home AC installs.
The Big Catch: R290 is an A3 Flammable
R32 is an A2L refrigerant, meaning it is mildly flammable and hard to ignite.
R290 is an A3 hydrocarbon. It is highly flammable.
If there is a leak, a static spark, a standard light switch, or a brushed motor on an old vacuum pump can trigger an ignition event. You cannot treat propane like synthetic chemical refrigerants.
What Changes on the Job?
Working safely with A3 gases requires completely different on-site protocols:
Spark-Free Tools: Your current recovery rigs, leak detectors, and vacuum pumps are likely source-of-ignition hazards. R290 requires specialized, intrinsically safe (Ex-rated) gear.
Room Size Calculations: You must calculate maximum gas charge weights against minimum room floor areas to ensure a leak won’t reach its Lower Explosive Limit (LEL).
Exclusion Zones: Propane is heavier than air. You need to map out safe physical zones away from drains, cellars, doors, and windows where leaked gas could pool.
The Bottom Line
Your standard F-Gas qualification certifies you to contain greenhouse gases. It does not certify your competency to handle highly explosive hydrocarbon fuels inside a residential property.
Failing to get certified means:
Voided Insurance: If an accident happens and you lack a certificate of competency for hydrocarbons, your business insurance likely won’t cover you.
Lost Work: Competitors who hold an R290 ticket will take the contracts for the newer, future-proofed systems.
