Let’s be honest: most of us waited to see if this ‘heat pump thing’ would actually stick. Well, the government just put their money where their mouth is.
Specifically, on 21st April 2026, DESNZ (the energy department) officially jacked up the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) grant to £9,000 for anyone switching from oil or LPG in England and Wales. Read the budget increase HERE.
Moreover, that’s a massive chunk of change. It puts us on par with Scotland and consequently means your customers can now swap an old, rattling oil boiler for a brand-new Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) without a second thought.
The biggest change for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme
Historically, everyone knew the upfront cost created the biggest hurdle for heat pumps. However, this £9,000 grant basically destroys that barrier. As a result, your phone will start ringing with off-grid customers who realise they can bag a high-spec system for next to nothing out of pocket.
Paul Rose from OFTEC put it clearly:
“We welcome the government’s recognition that off-grid households… face unique challenges and higher costs… Increasing the grant to £9,000 is a positive step.”
Translation? The industry big-hitters know the tide has turned. If you’re still only doing gas or oil, you’re leaving money on the table.
Why Bother Upskilling Now?
You’ve already got the Plumbing/Gas skills. You know how systems work. Transitioning to ASHP isn’t about reinventing the wheel; it’s just about learning the new tech and the design specs.
The Work is Guaranteed: The government is hell bent on “breaking the influence of gas.” You can either ride the wave or get wiped out by it.
Better Gear, Better Jobs: No more crawling into soot filled oil burners or dealing with sketchy gas valves. ASHP installs are cleaner, high-tech, and high margin.
We’ll Foot the Bill: We’re running funded ASHP installer courses. You get the certificate, the knowledge, and the MCS ready skills without the massive price tag for the training itself.
Get In, Get Trained, Get Earning
In short, don’t wait until every other firm in town has a “Heat Pump Specialist” sticker on their van. The rush is coming, and the engineers who prepare today will dominate the local market tomorrow.
Our instructors come straight from the tools. Because of this, they cut the fluff and show you exactly how to design, fit, and commission units that actually perform.
